Alice

This winter, while I was back in Canada, my sister introduced me to a mini series intitled Alice. Basically, it is about a young martial-arts instructor (Caterina Scorsone) witnesses a man's abduction and tries to intervene, which results in a trip through a magic mirror to a parallel universe in this modern retelling of Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass." Filmed in Vancouver, this show is wicked. It is the cleverest retelling of a classical story ever...well I think so.  There are so many perfect little nods to the original story that are really cool.

The Queen of Hearts (Kathy Bates) has taken over Wonderland and is kidnapping humans from the real world to suck them dry of all their emotions and sell it to the people of Wonderland as "tea."  While there, Alice meets Hatter who unwillingly helps her find her friend Jack, the man who's been kidnapped by the White Rabbit.

Basically, everyone needs to check this show out and guess what! It's available free to stream off the internet. Just go to http://www.sidereel.com/Alice_(2009)/season-1/episode-1

There are two episodes. Please enjoy!

John Galliano A/W 2004, look 17 from www.elle.com

There's something about this Sambourne illustration which makes me think of Galliano's A/W 04 collection.

Perhaps the fish tank in the Sambourne house won’t be empty after all: McQueen’s new spring/summer 10 collection affiliates our current ecological meltdown of the world with reptile-patterned dresses and digitally printed dresses, along with those crazy armadillo shoes. Hopefully we can pick up something from his collection.

The usual suspects shot by Karl Lagerfeld for last season's advertising campaign.  I'm feeling Lara Stone as a chain-smoking, semi-nude Goldilocks type...

Elephant Psychedelia

Is it only I who has ever questioned where the pink elephant parade in Dumbo come from? How does it actually contribute to the plot? I still can't figure it out, but it's way psychedelic for a young Disney audience.

These hooves were made for walking.

Iris Scieferstein's Gun/Hoof shoes go beyond the looking glass and down the most surreal of rabbit holes.  They would sit quite at home in 18, Stafford Terrace with the Sambourne's preserving their dead horse's hooves as curious ashtrays (not to mention the revolver Linley used to keep under the bed...).

This week I decided to do some thorough research into Linely Sambourne’s illustrations, to see if i could find more relevant designers and creatives.  Thanks to Nasir Mazhar- the hottest hat designer in town at the moment-his work was able to make that link: his designs are a general mix of fashion history (particularly the baroque period) and sci-fi futurism. Take a look for yourself; his designs are truly unique:  http://www.dazeddigital.com/Fashion/article/1101/1/Nasir_Mazhar_SS_09

A Fairy Happy Birthday

Daisy Lowe featured in The Sunday Times: Style magazine, 17th January 2010

The Fairy Tale theme is really getting a grip to everyone: In Style, it has been alleged that Daisy Lowe, who will be turning 21 very soon, is set to throw a magical party on the theme of Fairy Tales. She says that she'll be dressed as a fairy princess. In the mean time, i'll be keeping a close eye to any pictures from her party that might be published in the papers.

Jewellery by Mouton Collet

Inspired by the vegetal and animal world, Matthieu Mouton and Nicolas Collet- the duo behind the jewellery label, 'Mouton Collet'- have quite literally shined a new and challenging light towards menswear. I wonder if they would be willing to give us a lending hand...
